Playing Tips

  1. ASK QUESTIONS!!! The best people to ask are higher level players who have a great deal of experience mudding. By no means do we expect a newbie to be able to navigate the mud on the first day. You will encounter problems and situations, so don't be afraid to ask.
  2. Don't get frustrated! Everybody that is on the mud was a newbie once, they had problems too but they remained persistant and now they have done well as players. You do the same. If you try hard you'll be happy that you did down the road (like with anything in life).
  3. Play with fellow newbies. Play with other characters that are close to your level. All of you can learn much from each other. Party together! ('help party'). The common experience and fellowship wilfellowship will develop bonds with other players that will help you advance more in the future.
  4. Don't advance too much too quickly! As a newbie you get special privileges. Up through level 13, training skills/spells to 60% will cost you nothing. You will have access to the charity houses in the cities, bank transactions will cost you nothing, and you will not have to pay taxes for entering a city. So before you advance to level 14 make sure you have accumulated some cash so you can get around and be able to play.
  5. HAVE FUN! There is no other reason for you to be on here. If you don't enjoy developing and learning to make your character better, or don't have the patience to advance then there is no point for you to be on here. Retro is hard to learn, but worth learning for those who wish to do so.
Frequently Asked Question
What should I NOT DO in terms of player interaction?

You shouldn't do anything that you wouldn't do in real life, even if the world is a fantasy world. The important thing to remember is that it's the fantasy world of possibly hundreds of people, and not just yours in particular. There's a human being on the other side of each and every wire! Always remember that you may meet these other people some day, and they may break your nose. People who treat others badly gradually build up bad reputations and eventually receive the NO FUN Stamp of Disapproval. The jury is still out on whether MUDding is "just a game" or "an extension of real life with gamelike qualities", but either way, treat it with *care*.
Frequently Asked QuestionWho should I ask?
Wizards are usually helpful; if you know a wizard to be a wizard, then you can usually ask them a question or two. Make sure they're not busy first. Also, players who have been logged on for a long time (which you can check using the WHO command) are often helpful, as they are usually the veterans who've seen it all before. Asking relatively high level characters is usually the way to find things out, but be sure to be respectful of their status.
We can't possibly cover every detail and problem you'll encounter as a newbie. You have a long road ahead. Some say that road never ends. You'll learn many new things, and have fun in the process. So get ready to spend many late nights and long hours of fun.

Good luck, brave Adventurer!
